Once, many moons ago, I was hired as a videographer to film a wedding and the photographer never showed up. I was shooting on a DSLR and I didn’t want the couple to go without wedding photos, so I took pictures throughout the day and filmed as usual. To my great surprise and relief, it actually worked out pretty well and I started offering photography and video to my clients.
Now it’s my most popular service, and I love it because I love being a photographer and a videographer equally, I couldn’t choose one over the other. And because I am able to shoot both photography and video on my own (with an assistant who manages my gear), I am able to offer a wedding photography and film package at a lower rate than hiring seperate services or a studio service where at least two people are contracted to cover the day. That’s a massive perk for couples who are sticking to a budget when they’re planning their wedding.
While I am confident covering photos and videos on a single wedding day and love the results, I cannot possibly capture everything in both pictures and your wedding film. I prioritise photos over video, but some moments are better suited to video so I’ll film them. There will be moments that there is a photo of but not video, and moments in the film that weren’t photographed.
For this reason the photography and video package is intended for couples who love the style of imagery I take, and are looking for someone to capture their day and do a beautiful job of it, but aren’t worried about having every moment immortalised in photographs and a film. They don’t need their video to be perfect and see it as a bonus to the beautiful photos I know I can capture for them on their wedding day.
Couples who love my work but want very comprehensive photography and video coverage, and have the budget for it, should look into hiring me for either photography or video and hiring someone else for the other service. I know a lot of extremely talented photographers and videographers and can help you find someone whose style you love, within your price range.
If you had your heart set on having both a photographer and videographer on your wedding day but you don’t have the budget for it I would still love to work with you, but please understand that I am one person and you are not going to receive the same kind of video coverage that you would receive if you were hiring a separate videographer. I want my couples to choose the service that is right for them and be as informed as possible, so if you want to understand how the photography and video package actually works, please read on.
How do I do it?
Firstly, for the ceremony, speeches, first dance and any other formalities, I’ll set up a camera on a tripod to record the whole thing. It might not be the best angle because I don’t want the tripod to be in the way of guests or in all of your wedding photos, but you’ll always have the full ceremony and speeches with audio captured from your day. This tripod footage is used in your long videos of the ceremony and reception, not in the highlights video.
I also have two cameras on me all day. These are both fully professional mirrorless cameras that record incredible 4K video footage and take beautiful high resolution images. I can switch between photos and recording video with the press of a button, it’s fast and easy. A photograph is taken in a fraction of a second, and the highlights video is made up of 5-10 second snippets from 8hrs of shooting, and condensed into a 5minute video. So, for most of the day, like preparation coverage, candid reception stuff, dance shots and most of the ceremony, it’s easy to capture photos and video by switching between the two. I shoot A LOT and end up with lots and lots of photos and video snippets of beautiful moments from your wedding day.
However, there are parts of the day that happen very quickly where I won’t always have time to get photos and video footage; namely the kiss, coming down the aisle and walking back up the aisle together as a married couple. These moments happen fast, and they only happen once. Sometimes, like for a long aisle, I’ll still have time to capture photos and video and it’s super easy. Other times, like for the kiss or a short aisle, I shoot video because that way I know you’ll have the entire thing captured, and I can use stills from the video as images so that you do have a picture of the moment as well. I shoot in 4k, which means that stills from my video footage are high quality and look great. The catch is that they can’t be printed as large as a photograph, so I will never use video stills for a shot that I think you are going to want to blow up and put on the wall. Film stills will look fantastic in a wedding album though so they still work to ensure that you have pictures of those important moments in your wedding album, but it will not be the same as having one photographer and one videographer there to capture the moment simultaneously.
To sum up
The photography and video package has always been for couples who want a highlights video and wedding photos that capture the spirit of the day, honour their guests and their relationship and will bring them back to the day years after it has passed, but aren’t fussed if a moment makes it into the wedding album but not their video or vice versa. There is nothing wrong with wanting two services to ensure that you get the most coverage you can but if you’re looking at hiring me because you want both photography and video but don’t have the budget for two seperate services, please be aware that I will do my best but can’t simultaneously take photographs and video as two people could. In saying this, I am absolutely dedicated to every single wedding I shoot and my clients can expect to receive a 4-6min highlights video and 700+ photos from their wedding day, as well as the full recorded footage of their ceremony and speeches.
More than anything I want want to make sure you choose the right person and services for your wedding day and will be over the moon with the photos and videos you receive.
